SHORT CLIPS REVIEW
Medieval Help Desk, this video made me laugh because at times I feel this way working with technology. When new things are introduced into my world and I work on adding them into my daily life I am a little clueless too!
Piano Stair, I loved being a physical education teacher it made me happy that people wanted to take the stairs and even move a little quicker or even do back down! It is important to make changes in people lives fun, not work!
Pay Attention gave me a "WOW" not an "Aha" moment. I would love to let the students bring their phones and IPods into class and use them and I think the students would love it too. The problem is the administration; they seem to want to control everything. I understand there is a need to have someone in charge and have rules but sometimes it slows the learning process too.
MY GOAL: Make a lesson plan that involves phones and/or IPods. Share my idea first with other faculty members get their support and present the plan to administration. Who knows....?
EMBED VIDEO AND SUMMARY
This video from edutopia is about online learning. Anytime, Anywhere: Online Learning Shapes the Future. The video reports that 45 out of 50 states have online learning, these ranges from high school to college level. It is interesting that physical education can be taken on line too. The online classes help some students that are behind to make up the classes so they can graduate on time or if they want advance classes that their school does not offer they can take them online.
The video gives three reasons that schools like online learning courses. The first reason is the personalized learning, students can work at their own pace and can contact teacher at anytime. Second, online learning levels playing fields this exposes students at small schools or lower income school to be exposed to different levels that the students may not be able to be exposed to at their local school. The third reason is money; many schools could not pay for certified teacher in higher level of education. If a student wants to take an AP course or physics and their schools does not offer that course, the student can find it online at a low cost.
Some of the problems I see with online program are the teacher will not able available at all times. This program would make it hard to do group work because it takes away from the course being personalized. Students of lower income might have a hard time finding computer with Internet access and the resources needed.
I enjoyed the piano stairs video the most! It made me laugh. It was refreshing to see people of all ages, but especially young people that I normally only see vegitating in front of technology, doing something physical! I wonder how much it cost to install the piano keys? Why haven't more been installed? I think this could really catch on. It could become a new fitness craze...exercising by creating and playing music! Olivia Newton-John eat your heart out...
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for your goal! Good luck in showing the administration how useful those tools can be in enriching the lesson. It can be really hard to change their minds, but each time a teacher comes to them will hopefully begin to open their eyes to the possibilities this technology brings to education!

I am all for using these new forms of technology in the classroom, however I completely disagree about using cellphones in the classroom. Maybe it wouldn't be as much of an issue in high school, however, I have enough problems with my children and playing with pencils and erasers, and bullying each other in person. I can only imagine how much more bullying and playing I will see if my kids were to have access to cellphones throughout the day. I do give you kudos for being brave and trying to make a change, I just don't agree with the use of cell phones as a technological tool in education.
ReplyDeleteI watched the online learning video. I agree with a lot of what was said. I think it is great that it is more individualized and available at any time. I will say I have enjoyed this class so far but I do miss the interaction with the instructor and other students. I realize we do chat and comment but I do miss the personal interaction with you all. Even if it was a computer class that we all met once or twice I would feel better about it. I feel kind of cut off.
ReplyDeleteOnline learning seems to be the direction we are headed. I too seem some pitfalls, particularly with the lack of face-to-face interaction both between teacher and student and between student and student. However, it seems inevitable as there are certainly a vast number of positives. Good luck with your administration! I have implemented my first lessons with cell phones this year and it has been a great success.
