Marcinek, A. (2010, Dec 16). Help students use social media to empower, not just connect [Web log comment]. Retrieved from http://www.edutopia.org/blog/social-media-empowers-students-andrew-marcinek.
This blog touches on a very important topic I don’t think students think about. The student us the social sites the same way their peers do. A good friend of mine recruits for their business. When looking at future employees they review email address, if the address is something unprofessional the company’s stops looking at the resume and no longer considers them for the position. If they make to an interview the next step is looking their name up on facebook. Once again if something is unprofessional they no longer consider them for the position.
Andrew Marcinek’s believes that we as teachers need to expand the knowledge and use of the social media in an appropriate way along with, using these sites as a teaching tool. One example of a social media that may students my already use is facebook; teachers need to show students how to use them more effectively. I really liked how a teacher helped student make their facebook page look good for colleges. It is important that students are shown that this site can be a useful other than for the use of a social site. Andrew Marcinke says, “Teachers need to effectively model this behavior in order to teach students how to use social media to empower and go beyond simply connecting to others” (Marcinek, 2010).
