Module 4-2 Digital Literacy

Marcinek, A. (2010, Dec 16).  Help students use social media to empower, not just connect [Web log comment]. Retrieved from  http://www.edutopia.org/blog/social-media-empowers-students-andrew-marcinek.
This blog touches on a very important topic I don’t think students think about. The student us the social sites the same way their peers do. A good friend of mine recruits for their business. When looking at future employees they review email address, if the address is something unprofessional the company’s stops looking at the resume and no longer considers them for the position. If they make to an interview the next step is looking their name up on facebook. Once again if something is unprofessional they no longer consider them for the position.

Andrew Marcinek’s believes that we as teachers need to expand the knowledge and use of the social media in an appropriate way along with, using these sites as a teaching tool.  One example of a social media that may students my already use is facebook; teachers need to show students how to use them more effectively.  I really liked how a teacher helped student make their facebook page look good for colleges. It is important that students are shown that this site can be a useful other than for the use of a social site.  Andrew Marcinke says, “Teachers need to effectively model this behavior in order to teach students how to use social media to empower and go beyond simply connecting to others” (Marcinek, 2010).

Module 4 (part A) video reflection (part B) embed video & summary

SHORT CLIPS REVIEW
Medieval Help Desk, this video made me laugh because at times I feel this way working with technology. When new things are introduced into my world and I work on adding them into my daily life I am a little clueless too!

Piano Stair, I loved being a physical education teacher it made me happy that people wanted to take the stairs and even move a little quicker or even do back down!  It is important to make changes in people lives fun, not work!

Pay Attention gave me a "WOW" not an "Aha" moment. I would love to let the students bring their phones and IPods into class and use them and I think the students would love it too. The problem is the administration; they seem to want to control everything. I understand there is a need to have someone in charge and have rules but sometimes it slows the learning process too.

MY GOAL: Make a lesson plan that involves phones and/or IPods. Share my idea first with other faculty members get their support and present the plan to administration.  Who knows....?

EMBED VIDEO AND SUMMARY

This video from edutopia is about online learning. Anytime, Anywhere: Online Learning Shapes the Future. The video reports that 45 out of 50 states have online learning, these ranges from high school to college level. It is interesting that physical education can be taken on line too. The online classes help some students that are behind to make up the classes so they can graduate on time or if they want advance classes that their school does not offer they can take them online.

The video gives three reasons that schools like online learning courses. The first reason is the personalized learning, students can work at their own pace and can contact teacher at anytime. Second, online learning levels playing fields this exposes students at small schools or lower income school to be exposed to different levels that the students may not be able to be exposed to at their local school. The third reason is money; many schools could not pay for certified teacher in higher level of education. If a student wants to take an AP course or physics and their schools does not offer that course, the student can find it online at a low cost.

Some of the problems I see with online program are the teacher will not able available at all times. This program would make it hard to do group work because it takes away from the course being personalized. Students of lower income might have a hard time finding computer with Internet access and the resources needed.

Module 3 Google Docs

My experience with Google docs was interesting. I like the idea of two people working at the same time but it was hard to edit the document. It seem liked the cursor was off which made it really hard for me to edit. I like that my partner and I could be online at the same time. Not sure I would use this program again but would like to work with it a little more to see if I can get it to work better for me!
